📺 WHO'S HERE?
WHO'S HERE?
Serling is supposed to function like an open PSL for my friends and me. It is meant to have more continuity than a meme but be less demanding than a full game. It's a PSL-sandbox.
There isn't an application process and there's no commitment to stick around with the same character once you start but it's a good idea to know who and what we're working with so this post will serve as a roll call to see who is interested at the current the moment.
I'll also post the information for the scenario we'll be working with so people can have an idea of what to expect, plot with others, and ask questions.
The purpose of this post is
1. To essentially claim your character for the current scenario.
1A. NOTE: Please refer to the previous post to see who was claimed prior. Those players will have priority when claiming the same character.
2. Provide information about your character in lieu of an application
3. Plot for the upcoming scenario
In general, I'd like for this to consist of mostly people I know so we can work our character/story arcs together. Anyone on my plurklist (
eski) can jump in. I'll also let my friends invite others to join but you must ask/let me know first.
I'll throw posts like this up before each scenario so things are up to date.
Before filling out the form below, please check out the setting to know what we're working with in general. If you have any questions, check out the faq first.

STATE OF BOX
First of all, thank you, everyone, for joining me in this mad dream last month. This started off really impulsive and became A Thing. I know December is a chaotic time for a lot of us so we were all over the place as a result but I hope the content and general mood/pacing were fine? As a reminder, this is supposed to more like a chill musebox/group PSL we can play in without stressing about things like AC/etc.
I know a lot of us were all over the place for the holidays and stuff and felt like we didn't go through with things we planned. It's fine! Feel free to jump into this month fresh and new. :)
That said, the guided run of this musebox is scheduled to end in the spring (March/April-ish). There will be an open ending and Serling will remain open as a sandbox once it ends. The reason: I am 500% moving either across the country or across the globe in summer 2022. Starting in the spring, I'll be focusing on my next steps IRL.
I wanted to share this with everyone officially so everyone could plan and pace their own arcs and goals. Feel free to privately message me on plurk or discord if you have anything you want to do! Speaking of discord, we have a discord server!
January and February are currently set. During that time, we'll see if March will be an ordinary scenario or our end game scenario. You'll know in February!
Now, let's get onto January news.

SCENARIO II
It's our second scenario! I'm going to play around with the formatting a bit here and break it into 2 logs: A general log for the month dealing with the overall shenanigans and an event log that will deal with a specific part of the scenario with more action.
Hopefully, everyone has been settling into their new lives. Have you had a chance to meet everyone yet? If not, don't worry. Your friendly neighborhood councilman Claude von Riegan is going to have a [backdated] New Year party at his house. This will be set up as an open top-level for everyone to reply to. Replying is optional and you're free to handwave things here. It's just a way to IC-ly gather everyone together, formally introduce yourself, and info share.
After everyone has counted down to midnight and the party is over, everyone is free to go home but the next morning, they'll wake up to find… the newspaper thrown on their lawn says the date is January 1st, 1959. That's right; it looks like instead of moving to the next year, we have to do 1959 all over again.
EDIT: And because I forgot to mention it, new characters will arrive in Abandoned Serling and have to make their way to Beaver Wood like we did in our first scenario. This can be handwaved! Everyone will arrive on January 1st in one of the homes-- it can be a random house or their future home. Like in the first scenario, they'll find a minor regain in their home. Unfortunately, this means they'll miss the party but other info-sharing opportunities are possible if players want to work something out.
The NPC Serlingers will continue to evolve. When they aren't randomly trying to harm us, they're actually trying to appeal to us as much as possible. They emulate friends and loved ones from home to try and become more likable. They can never actually be those people though and they will always be limited by who and what they are (ordinary people!) so they'll never actually be the people they're trying to emulate… but they're trying. Of course, they will continue to try and hurt us so keep your guards up.
How was everyone's Christmas? Did you get a lot of gifts? How are you homes? Are you enjoying all of the things inside? One of Serling's best points is that everything is modern. In case you were taking it all for granted before, the machines in Serling will begin to go rogue. Lights and appliances will turn on and off on their own, your car will begin to drive itself, and it all seems strange but harmless until the iron rises like a cobra and tries to slam you in the face or your electric razor begins to chase you. Your car might try to run you over on its own and your toaster might try to take a bath with you. Hell, maybe your toaster took a bath with your NPC family… It's humans versus machines in Serling and no one is safe.
The machines will try to attack for most of the month. Everything will stop on January 23rd OOC.
Curious events will overlap with one each other. Starting ~January 16th OOC, characters will be gripped with a fear of going to sleep. When it's time to go to sleep, they'll feel dread and anxiety like they really don't want to go to sleep. When they do go to sleep, they'll have very vivid and detailed nightmares that they are being attacked by other player characters in Serling.
For example,
- Claude can dream he's being poisoned by Sakura.
- Sakura can dream Tsurumaru is chasing her down to kill her.
- Tsurumaru can dream that Claude and Sakura are the generals leading an enemy army against him.
The dream is always very detailed and vivid. They will always wake up before they die but wake up with a heavy sense of dread and despair. You know that if you ever lose in your dream against that person, something bad will happen.
Every night, your dreams get closer and closer to killing you until finally, after a week (on January 23rd OOC), you know if you go to sleep, you will die. And it's true! If you go to sleep, you really will have one final nightmare and die. You will experience a fatal heart attack in your sleep and wake up in the morgue at the hospital the next day. By the way, if you die, you'll find… your body where you went to sleep.
Your nightmares will bleed into reality and characters will experience a sense of dread, doom, despair, and paranoia at all hours of the day. The feeling increases when they see the people from their dreams.
Characters will have to try to stay awake for one full week.
Two scenario-specific NPCs will arrive to help that week.
The first will be a woman who appears in town. She'll offer characters a spell that will make them immortal. They will, in fact, actually be immortal so they can sleep without fear of death… but they'll still have the effects of the event: Dread, paranoia, fatigue, nightmares trying to kill them.
The second NPC will be the owner of a small shop that suddenly appears downtown. He will give you "things you need" and the thing you need is to stay awake right now. He'll give you a charm that will give you one night of dreamless sleep, thus, keeping you alive for each night you don't dream. It can only be used 3 times. You can give the charm to other people to protect them but it still only has 3 uses.
Both NPCs will be permanently available after the event as parts of the setting. The shop will appear "when you need it" and offer you a chance to get regains for a price. The woman will also be around but as for her purpose? You'll have to see.

UPCOMING
Our next scenario/intro log will go up at roughly…
11:00AM GMT+9 (Tokyo), 7 January
1:00PM GMT+11 (Canberra), 7 January
6:00PM GMT-8 (Los Angeles), 6 January
9:00PM GMT-5 (New York City), 6 January
2:00AM GMT (London), 7 January
It's my first day back at work so I don't know exactly how it will go so please bear with me if it goes up a little early/late that day. I won't know my schedule for the month until I actually walk into work that morning. 🥲
As mentioned, the NPC shop will offer regains after it appears. There will be some other opportunities too but you'll see those at the end of the month... so keep an eye out.
