What is Serling?
serling is a PSL-sanbox run by Eski (
diejoubu). It is a horror styled PSL that takes place in the 1950s and is loosely inspired by the Twilight Zone. Since I was a member in both games before, some inspiration will also come from Mayfield and We're Still Here.
Characters arrive in a 1950s suburbia jamjar and must work together to get through the Twilight Zone themed horrors that happen to them.
How long will this last?
Technically, as long as we want to.
I have scenarios/events planned that should give us a bit of a run until we reach our "end." The end will be open and leave open the door to re-visit the setting with the same or new characters if we want to continue on our own.
That said, I have big real-life things happening in summer 2022 so the guided run will end before then.
How do I join?
First, you gotta know me (
diejoubu) or know someone who knows me.
If you want to invite a friend, that's fine but you have to let me know first.
If you're a stranger with no connection to me or my friends, feel free to reach out to me anyway. The whole point of the invite system is for me to keep track of what I'm working with at a time.
Who can I play?
We are friends here... whoever we want.
How many characters can I play?
As many as you want but just be mindful of your own time/limits/plans.
Is there an overarching plot?
Kind of. There is a loose plot with an ending to work towards but it really ain't that deep so don't stress about it. Keeping in the spirit of the Twilight Zone⦠sometimes things just happen for no real reason.
Do I get to keep my powers?
It depends.
All characters start off with one small regain from home (an item or power/ability). At the end of a scenario, they will have the option to power up their small regain to a moderate regain or request a second regain (small or medium tier).
Here's a general idea of regain tiers:
Small
β No larger than a large dog
β Unlimited use at 20% power OR,
β 50% power for a short period of time (15-30 minutes)
Medium
β No larger than the size of a car
β Unlimited use at 50% power OR,
β 75% power everyday but for a short period of time (1-2 hours each day)
Large regain
β No larger than a house
β 100% power and unlimited use BUT game-breaking powers and so on will have limits
Items and powers do not have to be regained separately so you can regain a healing staff and some minor healing abilities or a magic sword and temporary flamesword form.
IN GENERAL I'm not going to police this so have fun with the regain mechanics to make your characters struggle as much or as little as possible. The idea is for characters to struggle to some extent (hence the nerfing) but sometimes it's fun to also save the day in a bad scenario.
The only hard rule is no gamebreaking powers.
My character isn't human. Will they need to be humanized?
In Regular Serling, yes, but only in the beginning. The idea is that everyone will start off as ordinary as possible at first. They can regain their non-human traits (animal features, robot pieces, etc) but it'll follow the same rules as regular regains.
Yes, your non-human traits can be your first small regain but it might only be a temporary formβ something you can shift into for a short period of time.
How does housing work?
It's 1950s traditional so presumably, it's a family of four: a mother, father, and two children.
How it ends up will be flexible and up to you. Again, I'm not really keeping tabs, or else I would actually have a housing page, you know?
You might get assigned an NPC husband/wife/child if your house is missing a role and you can kick out/replace your NPC family if you want. You can replace them by killing off your NPC family, locking them out of the house until they "move on*", or just handwave that y'all were a family from the beginning or something.
Some NPCs might move on and establish new lives like nothing ever happened! But others might keep trying to come back. They might even try to evolve specifically to appeal to you so you'll like them more. Or maybe they'll take the more aggressive approach and try to harm whoever replaced them. There are a lot of ways to play this out so go wild.
What counts as a child/adult here?
Up to 18/19 years old is considered a child and they'll be expected to attend school
19-21ish will count as "university student" if you want to be that. While there is no university, everyone will act like you're currently attending one and you're just working part time to help your family out/pay your own tuition or something.
18/19+ is basically an adult and you can choose to ~be a university student~ or start working 4 real.
Anything else???
Please this is supposed to be chill PSL stuff with vague structure. I just want to have fun with my friends so I'm not thinking about rules too deeply. If you have any questions, ask here or hit me up on plurk/discord.
